One of the hallmarks of a person who is described as “a mainstream politician” is a willingness and acceptance of the requirement to comply with the wishes of certain others. This acceptance being conditional of course on precisely WHAT is required and to WHOM.
Thus it is that we see female journalists and female politicians on our TV screens wearing head-scarves in Muslim countries. Thus when Madam May travels to Saudi Arabia expect to see her suitably veiled.
A certain Ms Marion Anne Perrine Le Pen however is from a very different mould!
Arriving in Lebanon, a meeting scheduled with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian this morning has been cancelled due to Ms Le Pen’s refusal to cover herself!
The lady told reporters: “You can pass on my respects to the Grand Mufti, but I will not cover myself up.”
British Gazette comment: Ms Le Pen clearly went to Lebanon with the intention that this should happen! It is of course a brilliant piece of electioneering! This is because it goes right to the heart of the issue regarding what now is termed “identity politics”.
It is pretty clear that France is in for a fairly torrid time in 2017. Ms Le Pen is expected to top the poll in the first round of the French presidential elections. The questions still to be answered are:
1. How far ahead of the second placed candidate will she be?
2. Who will be that second placed candidate?
The runner up will either be François Fillon or Emmanuel Macron. The opinion polls suggest that either runner up would beat Ms Le Pen. Which is why the British Gazette has called the election for Macron. This is because Fillon has been badly damaged by scandal and that those on the left could not support him.
