• Brexit: Send in the clowns!

Above songstress Judy Collins with her 1975 rendition of Stephen Sondheim’s 1973 classic, “Send In The Clowns”.

Our choice of this You-Tube video is because of a comment by the song’s creator, the “clowns” in the title do not refer to circus clowns. Instead, they symbolise fools, as Sondheim explained in a 1990 interview:

“I get a lot of letters over the years asking what the title means and what the song’s about; I never thought it would be in any way esoteric. I wanted to use theatrical imagery in the song, because she’s an actress, but it’s not supposed to be a circus … …It’s a theatre reference meaning “if the show isn’t going well, let’s send in the clowns”; in other words, “let’s do the jokes.” I always want to know, when I’m writing a song, what the end is going to be, so “Send in the Clowns” didn’t settle in until I got the notion, “Don’t bother, they’re here”, which means that “We are the fools.”

Given Sondheim’s explanation, the use seems justified to comment upon Dimwit Davis’s resignation and “Raab D. Brexit” as his replacement.

The new man, Raab D. Brexit, of course will only see the new proposals fly, subject to porcine aviation being achieved!

The one thing we can hope for in this desultory state of affairs is that it is all part of a grand coup de théâtre or as now could be more fittingly be described as a théâtre de l’absurde!

That this might in fact be all or part theatre, could be borne out in a sentence that formed part of an email sent to MP Derek Thomas by the Chairman of the UKIP branch in the St. Ives constituency:
“……The cherry on the cake was when we read in the run-up to the Chequers shenanigans that Mrs May actually showed her proposals to Mrs Merkel – before she showed them to her own Cabinet…..”
This extraordinary state of affairs might indicate that the Brexit process is being managed at the European Level. Jean-Claude Juncker European Commission President has of course summed the Brexit situation up splendidly, with his infamous quote:

“We all know what to do, we just don’t know how to get re-elected after we’ve done it!”

IF Brexit is to be achieved WITHOUT chaos the UK will end up remaining in the EEA but as a member of EFTA not the EU – after a (hopefully) brief period of a vassal state of the EU being in the EEA and being in the EU Customs Union.
